Get California privet Ligustrum ovalifolium for your garden for a neat and compact evergreen hedge perfect for sheltering wildlife and nesting birds; in early summer your plants reveal white flower heads followed by little black berries which garden birds like to eat from summer.
Your privet Ligustrum ovalifolium plants provide shelter for vulnerable garden wildlife including slug-eating amphibians and mammals like much-loved hedgehogs. Shelter is all-important for wildlife during the colder months, and in the summer when they can take shelter from the dehydrating sun.
In winter your privet Ligustrum ovalifolium hedge will form the backbone of your garden while other flowers and plants are dormant. Beautiful when covered in frost and fully hardy to the cold temperatures your plants will thrive even in the most exposed and cold parts of the UK.
Your plants arrive as bare-root specimens which means they have a central bare and dormant stem attached to a strong set of roots. In this state plant your bare-root specimens from September to March so the roots get used to the soil over winter, becoming weather-tough and productive before lots of leafy and flowering stems from spring onwards.
Position your plants around 75cm (2 1/2ft) apart and they come together to form a hedge. Consider planting temporary bedding for colour and to keep weeds down while you wait for your privet Ligustrum ovalifolium to cover the bare soil.
Every September give your plants a haircut with shears to keep them in shape for a formal hedge. Repeat the process in June with a much lighter cut and check for nesting birds beforehand. Leave trimming to the autumn if you notice bird activity in June.
10 bare-root plants.
Height: 3m / 10ft if left untrimmed.
